Rupee Slides to Record Low as Global Pressures Intensify

₹ - $ May 20, 2026

The Indian rupee continued its downward trajectory on Wednesday, weakening sharply against the US dollar amid mounting global economic pressures and rising geopolitical uncertainty. The currency depreciated nearly 20 paise in early trade to touch an all-time low of 96.90 against the US dollar, reflecting sustained pressure from a strengthening greenback and elevated crude oil prices.Market sentiment remains fragile as ongoing Iran-US tensions continue to push oil prices higher, increasing concerns over India’s import bill and widening trade deficit. As one of the world’s largest crude oil importers, India remains highly sensitive to energy price volatility, which directly impacts the rupee.Recent market data highlights the extent of the currency’s decline. The USD/INR pair closed at 96.53 on 19 May 2026, compared to 95.64 on a weekly basis, 92.60 a month ago, and 91.03 during the previous quarter. On a yearly basis, the rupee has weakened significantly from 85.36, translating into a yearly decline of 13.09%.The data further indicates that the rupee has depreciated 6.04% on a quarterly basis and 4.24% over the last month alone, underscoring the accelerating pace of the selloff. The current level also marks the weakest point for the currency in the past year, with the yearly low recorded at 96.53 on 19 May 2026.Indian currency has emerged as the worst-performing currency in the Asian region in 2026, having fallen more than 8% since the start of the year. The rupee had begun the year trading in the 89–90 range against the US dollar before slipping steadily below the 96-mark.The sharp depreciation has been driven by a combination of aggressive dollar demand, foreign fund outflows, higher US Treasury yields, and geopolitical risk premiums linked to the Middle East conflict. Since the escalation of the Iran conflict in late February, the rupee has reportedly declined nearly 6%.Disclaimer: PolyMart does not offer guarantees regarding the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of the information provided on its platform.
